August 12, 1982 – Thursday

Today we went to visit Jean (the lady from South Carolina). Then we went to Mammy’s apartment. She needed some medicine so we went & got it for her. That’s all we did today, really! Hard to believe, huh? We did nothing at all after we got home except watch TV. Boring!

When I think about the fact that we only had 5 channels of television and probably no VCR yet, I’m sure it WAS boring! However, I think kids today have so many options at their fingertips to keep them in a constant sensory overload that just going outside and playing has become a lost art.

Mammy, by the way, was my great-grandmother. She was widowed by this time, but here is a picture of her with my great-grandfather, who we called simply “Daddy Browning”.

Mammy used to scare me a little bit. I’m sure you can see why.
